Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Mad Max: Fury Road had a very unusual post-production in terms of color. The original mad max fury was one of the first apocalyptic films to be made. Some films with the same genre are de-saturated or has a bleach look. Director George Miller wanted Fury Road to have a saturated, sharp and graphic quality to the image. Mad Max Fury Road colorist, Eric Whipp said that "It was difficult to push the image to appear vibrant without it looking cheap and often we found that the key was to have a rich contrast against the warmth of the sand and the characters".

If you have seen the film, you'll notice that the eyes of all the characters are some what grabs your attention, it's because George Miller wants the audience to focus on the characters eyes. Colorist of this film spent a lot of time ensuring that the attention in any given shot guided you towards the eyes. meet the colorist

The Lighting continuity wasn't perfect. The grading process was used to iron out some of the daylight differences between shots to help cut between sunny day and a cloudy day.

There are parts of the movie that they used day for night. According to the colorist, They dropped the exposure of the shot overall, gave it a stylized blue night look, and dug anything they wanted out of the shadows without excessive noise and grain. Typically, a night shot looks like it was bleached out, and without color. In this film, they made a good choice in making the blue color strong.

Day for night

Fury Road has an amazing opening scene, seeing all those post-apocalyptic vehicles in a wasteland setting are carefully pieced together. Miller proves that one way to effectively focus your audience's attention on the action and characters is to diminish the background's importance. Effects

You have to make sure that the important part of the shot stands out, especially if that part is a key factor to that scene. The film seems to have less bluish tones that have become popular in most films today. They made the images crisp and clear with blue skies, brown earth tones and skin complexions coming through in realistic ways.

The effect seeing such chaos set against the cloudless skies create a contrasting mixture made from equal parts. The saturation in this film is also increased to achieved the graphic novel look the director wants. Based on the sample image, we can see that it was an amazing result. You can feel the emotions of the scene. This kind of style helps keeps the audience entertained and interested.

Having this kind of color in a full length film is a bit of a challenge. Because you'll be having different shots, days, scenes and you can't predict the weather. You have to have a very keen eye for details so you could sustain the consistency of the film. For me, I can say that it's not easy to achieve this look because you will not just adjust the colors, you also need to know what color to use and the amount of colors you'll be using. And also, every elements in the film is important, it helps delivers the film emotions to the audiences.
